SOA's opportunity in SaaS
Amy Wohl

Management introduction
As the Software as a Service (SaaS) industry begins to move from appealing concept to early successes, it is possible to see various specific segments and trends emerging. These are changing fast and there is ever increasing action.
Yet, even at this nascent stage, this is a good time to inspect these separate notions, to see how they are affected by new technologies and ideas and to examine developing market demand. In this analysis Amy Wohl, a long time observer of SaaS, describes how she sees the situation, especially in the light of SOA.

Management conclusion
The logic for the SaaS industry to start using SOA is compelling, as Ms Wohl describes. Indeed, if SOA makes sense for enterprises there can really be little sense in SaaS vendors not adopting SOA disciplines.
Furthermore, by adopting SOA, one or more serious SaaS vendors could create and then realize an eco-system opportunity that subsequent SaaS competitors might find extremely hard to challenge. If the technical logic is there, so is the business case.
